THE FISHERWOMAN & THE GARDENER, 1998 - 1990

Sometimes meetings occur that bring to mind vivid associations.  Similarly, while looking at a gathering of elements in a painting, the colours and shapes might entertain a glimpse of recognition. It all depends on the maker’s intention towards clarity in construction and a viewer’s willingness to suspend judgement.

I recall seeing three women clad in silk in kimonos, dance in unison alongside fishing boats at the Tokyo docks.  We were enjoying a New Year party in suburban Monzen Nakajo and watching a video of a traditional ceremony for the fishing fleet. Seeing the drift of dancers’ bodies in their flowing garments seemed to capture the motion of ocean waves as they drew bounteous catches of fish into their nets.
