ORGANICA SERIES, 2010-2011

The guiding system for the colours and shapes is pentagonal, while the Organic apaintings are not like any pentagonal paintings I have made before. Here the colour layers reflect my choices and thinking about making at this time. I appraise each painting by looking into it, a process of discovery that is continuous and intimate.

The title, Organica acknowledges my interest in the colour perception experiments of Russian avant-garde painter, teacher and musician, Mikhail Matiushin (1861-1934), who was active in St. Petersburg during the early part of the 20th century.  Matiushin’s understanding of the embodied nature of seeing colours according to conditions in which they are seen, contributes a link of historic continuity to my experiments with abstract painting. I am in agreement with Matiushin’s insistence that perception cannot be separated from our body’s inherent connection with nature.
